Leading Self and Others

Mastering the art of leading; achieving progress through the development, engagement, involvement and actions of others

Leadership is hard to define and means different things to different people. Irrespective of the context we expect leaders to set direction and help themselves and others to be focused on the right things to move forward. This includes holding in balance a number of potentially competing interests: doing and being, results and relationships, present and future. This may appear simple but is not easy.

To accomplish this, requires a leader to fully understand their role, their impact and influence on others with humility, vulnerability and confidence. Staying resilient and calm under pressure while being authentic and holding appropriate boundaries. To lead effectively is challenging; to focus on bringing your full self to the task, and to build and coach others to be stronger and competent with care and compassion.

Working on the following five behaviours enhances leader's capabilities to lead self and others:

  • Authenticity - I express myself honestly and in alignment with my values and beliefs
  • Resilience - I have the ability to adapt and bounce back when things don't go as planned
  • Coaching - I coach others to support them to achieve their personal desired outcomes and business objectives
  • Motivating Others - I motivate others with enthusiasm, through understanding what motivates and inspires their contributions
  • Creating Clarity - I clarify and confirm both quantitative and qualitative expectatations and ensure end results are clear and defined
