Paving the Way

Clear the path to enable individuals and teams to achieve their ideas and solutions for improvement

Great leaders know that an essential responsibility is to clear the way for their employees and teams to achieve their desired outcomes. As in the tour de France, clearing the way for cyclists to pass through without interference from the excited spectators. This includes enabling the team to respond to changes in the environment, creating the capacity for autonomous decision making and ensuring the right relationships are in place as well as adequate resources to support their needs.

To be attuned to the needs of the team and proactively addressing them is a massive way to pave the way to success.

Working on the following five behaviours provides ways for paving the way to be developed and enhanced:

  • Agility - I enable others to quickly adapt their way of working, to respond to the emerging needs of customers and other stakeholders
  • Autonomy - I create the capacity for autonomous action and decision making, ensuring all information and authority is available and provided
  • Removing Obstacles - I constructively and proactively remove obstacles - resources, relationships - that are in the way of realizing objectives
  • Managing Conflict - I willingly address conflicts, pursuing all alternatives to find a win-win solutions
  • Urging Action - I urge the team to take action and getting the job done
